Ticket validating machines: How do I use a bus and train validating machine when abroad please?
travelling abroad throughout the europeen union area.will need to use bus, metros and rail services. told that you buy ticket from newsstand vendor and validate it on a train, etcetera. but how do i work the machines please?
I mean, if costs are rated per mile, then do i need to know the distance to the stop i am going to?
This question cannot be answered in general; it depends on the country or even the individual town or area since all may have different systems.
Tickets for long distance train travel for example are either issued for a certain train or are valid for a certain day or may even be flexible to be used within 2 months whenever you like to do. Those tickets do not need to be validated on machines but will be checked and stamped by a conductor in the train.
For local travel within a city or a travel zone of a traffic association you will buy your tickets from vending machines which may either have travel zones or list the name of the city you want to travel to. Based on this information you will bye your ticket and have to stamp it either before you enter the platform of a train station or in the bus or tramway.
You do not need to know the distance to the stop you will go to but just need to know the name to buy your ticket.
